At Advanced Hair Restoration of Oklahoma, your treatment starts long before you set foot in our office, and continues long after you leave.

Once we've determined hair transplant surgery is a good fit for you, we will assess your personal needs to form the best treatment for you. The procedure centers around the removal of hair follicles from a donor site located on the back or sides of the scalp and moving them to the top of the scalp where balding occurs. The donor site is always located on the side or back portions of the scalp where hair follicles are not sensitive to DHT and are still producing strong healthy hair.

The most common method of transplant is the Strip Method, which takes a thin strip of tissue with numerous hair follicles, dissects and sections them into individual micrografts, and then transplants them to the bald areas of the scalp.

During the hair transplant procedure, which takes about 4-5 hours for an average transplanting of 1500-2000 grafts, the patient is given oral sedation and the scalp is numbed with local anesthesia. The donor area is closed with plastic surgery technique, using sutures that are completely hidden from view by the overlying hair.

Sutures are removed from the donor site either at Advanced Hair Restoration of Oklahoma or, if a patient is not local, through their primary care physician 10-14 days after the procedure.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is another method for hair transplant surgery. The main difference is that this method removes follicles one at a time using a hand punch or using a machine that has a drill-type punch. With this procedure, there is a generally the need to shave the back of the scalp where the donor hair will be taken. Because follicles are taken one by one, this method typically takes longer to complete and is more obvious on the patient since the head must be shaved in the donor area. In addition, there is some concern for the quality of the follicle since the graft is taken somewhat blindly. Unfortunately, a damaged or transected follicle will not produce a healthy hair and can result in a less than satisfactory transplant. Today, robotic technologies are also being used to automate the removal of the donor follicles using robotic punches.
